3 From 3 – CGFT Takes Over Mandurah

March 10, 2019

Saturday March 2, 2019 saw Futures IX brought to you by Chantel Green of True Grit Thaiboxing in Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre. The star studded card saw some of Western Australia’s best talent on show. Champions Gym Fight Team saw Four time state champion Victoria Sullivan challenging the legendary Leonie Macks (Urban Fight Gym, QLD) for the WMC lightweight (61.26kg) Australian title, veteran David Deves taking on Jhett Nelson (Lanna Prestige Muay Thai) and Jessica Todoroski versus Sharmaine Osbourne (Fierce Fight Academy).

Whilst most see these three as “Fighters”, they lead quite the normal life outside of training and competition – Jessica Todoroski is a Mum, Victoria Sullivan is a banker and David Deves in an architect… Quite a unique set of skills – One of the beautiful aspects of our great club!

WITHDRAWAL PLAGUES RETURN OF TUNA

Only three weeks prior to the event, it was the highly anticipated return to the ring for Whitney Tuna was due to defend her WMC light bantamweight title against Kaelee Mallard (Kalamunda Kickboxing). Unfortunately Mallard was deemed unfit to fight and forced to withdraw on Doctor’s orders. The replacement in Kaitlyn Vance was short lived following confirmation not longer than 24 hours before withdrawing. It would have been the first bout since her second knee reconstructive surgery nine months prior. Whitney Tuna without an opponent, was forced to take a seat on the sidelines this time around.

JESSICA TODOROSKI (CGFT) VS SHARMAINE OSBOURNE (FIERCE)

In a fast paced bout between two tough Mums, over three rounds of action it would be Todoroski who took the win following some solid kicks and punches, scoring a flash knock down in round two from a head kick. Todoroski is now 3-0 and would love to secure a state title opportunity.

DAVID DEVES (CGFT) VS JHETT NELSON (LANNA PRESTIGE)

It was a fast paced bout between two welterweights with nothing to lose. David Deves had overcome injury and mental pressure following two original opponent withdrawals to take on a young and upcoming bull in Jhett Nelson. Deves’ punches and kicks would prove to be too much in the end sealing the deal with a unanimous points decision.

VICTORIA SULLIVAN (CGFT) VS LEONIE MACKS (URBAN FIGHT GYM, QLD)

The main event worthy bout saw Western Australia’s own favourite four-time champion Victoria Sullivan challenging for the WMC lightweight Australian title against legendary veteran Leonie Macks from Urban Fight Gym, Queensland.

This would be the third national title opportunity for Sullivan – In 2018, Sullivan fought multi-time champion Chelsea Hackett to go down by points in what would be, what Hackett claimed ‘as her toughest fight’ and then in June Brooke Cooper for the lighter division 58.97kg title where she battled a slipped disk through her 8 week training camp only to lose by split points decision.

This bout was nothing less than epic as the two went toe to toe over five rounds. At the end of round four, it seemed that the scores sat at 2-2 in a draw and it would take something special for the West Australian . to bring it home over a very strong and experienced campaigner. Sullivan seemed to dig deep, landing kick-cross combinations and walking Macks down in a defiant bid to steal the round and ultimately, what would be the decider in an nail biting women’s national championship bout.

At the decision it was a unanimous decision win to Victoria Sullivan, now a four-time State Champion (WMC & WBC Muaythai) and new WMC lightweight (61.26kg) Australian Champion.

CGFT’S 10TH TITLE IN SEVEN YEARS & 2ND AUSTRALIAN TITLE IN SIX MONTHS

This was a momentous occasion as it marked the 10th championship title win for Champions Gym in seven years of operation, the second national title win in six months (following Chris Watt’s victory for the ISKA Australian title over Victorian Alex Ilijoski in October 2018).

We would like to say a massive thank you to the Promoter of the event – Chantel Green, The Loyal Blue Army – WE DID IT! All of our wonderful team, supporters, coaches and staff who make this club so great… Without your support, none of this would be possible!
